Litzau, Guerrero face off friday!

Thursday, February 28th, 2008

Showtime starts off an explosive weekend of boxing this Friday with IBF featherweight champion Robert Guerrero (21-1-1, 14 KO’s) defending against Jason Litzau (23-1, 19 KO’s). Both combatants have aggressive in your face styles.

Expect fireworks as the hometown Guerrero (a southpaw) has knocked out 13 of his last 15 opponents. Guerrero is a large featherweight that throws strong well placed punches. In fact his last fight lasted only 56 seconds after a devasting straight left laid his opponent out for the count!

Litzau nicknamed “The American Boy” hails from St Paul, Minnesota. Raised in a broken home Litzau brings his anger to the ring. Normally a huge trash talker the challenger has taken a low key approach to this fight just stating that he plans to “let his fists do the talking”. Litzau’s defense is suspect, but his punching power and tenacity more than make up for it.

This will be a solid fight. Check for the results only on Chuckboxing.com!

Pavlik issued a challenge by # 1 Lorenzo

Wednesday, February 27th, 2008

The WBC has released its February ratings and undefeated middleweight contender Giovanni Lorenzo (26-0, 18 KOs) has been installed as the #1 mandatory challenger to WBC champion Kelly Pavlik. Lorenzo says he wants to make it clear that he wants to fight Pavlik “today” and not wait for the mandatory term to expire. “Everyone knows that a fight between me and Kelly will be an all action, knockdown fight,” said Lorenzo. “Someone’s 0 will have to go and most definitely it will be by brutal knockout. I was the first one to congratulate Kelly back stage after he won the title in September, and I will be the first one to take it from him on June 7th….if he can get his promoter to agree to the fight.”

A Heavy Weight Title bout at the Garden!

Saturday, February 23rd, 2008

klitschkoibragimov.jpgThis is Punchy Clark reporting On big Chuck’s site. I hope I live up to the standard of Big Chuck. I’ll be making notes throughout the fight! You have to be pumped for a Heavyweight title bout at MSG.

Ibragimov is looking ready and Klitschko comes out with a much better song choice. Will this fight end with another riot at the Garden?

Emanuel Stewart is currently mugging for camera time, right behind Michael Buffer.

Seems like there are more Klitschko fans. Brighton Beach must be empty tonight.

Round 1) Lots of sizing up. Klitschko trying to knock down that right jab. Lennox Lewis just tried to say athletisism, this is the highlight of the fight so far. Pretty even round.

Round 2) Klitschko is getting the jab going. This one goes to Klitschko.

Round 3) Ibragimov has got to get inside or he is in big trouble. Round goes to Klitschko.

Round 4) Its nice not to have Larry Merchant slowing down the broadcast. Round goes to Klitschko.

Round 5) Ibragimov has got to do something. Klitschko is jabing him at will. Another for Klitschko. Dig Don has it at 4 to 1 for Klitschko.

Round 6) At this point, Ibragimov has shown nothing. he is wasting everbodys time. Another for Klitschko. Don thinks that Klitschko can win with one hand.

Round 7) My buddy Matt, who was so excited about this fight today, is now 6 tabling online poker and dos not even know this fight is on anymore. Klitschko again.

Round 8) Ibragimov is going with the turtle defense. We are now getting a little activity going. This might be a shutout. Big letdown. Ibragimovs corner just reminded him that he is fighting a big man, Good advice.

Round 9) The ropes save Ibragimov. Should have been a knockdown. The NY Giants are in the house, I love it. Should have been 10-8.

Round 10) Ibragimov’s corner has nothing to offer. He goes in for a takedown. Ibragimov has to get desperate. Another for Klitschko.

Round 11) Now I remember why i never liked Klitschko. Go for the knockout man.

Round 12) Ibragimov shows no heart and it is done. The Heavyweight division turns in another “clunker”! No riot over this bout!

To bad the first round by round was such a dud. Michael Buffer has made it official. Klitschko is the winner!

Is Sultan Ibragimov ready?

Friday, February 22nd, 2008

sultanibragimov.jpgSultan Ibragimov (22-0, 17 KO’s) faces his toughest test by far this Saturday. The current WBO champ takes on Wladimer Klitschko (49-3, 44 KO’s) at Madison Square Garden in a unification bout. This will be the 1’st heavyweight unification since 1999. Ibragimov was an amateur star taking home a 2000 Olympic silver medal. He lost Gold to Cuba’s Felix Savon who used a good straight jab to keep the aggresive Russian at bay. Since turning pro, the 32 year old Ibragimov has smashed opposition with his dangerous left hand and heart stopping pace.

But is Ibagimov ready for this type of challenge?

I feel that Ibragimov MUST nullify Klitshcho’s power in order to win. He can only do this by moving his legs (specifically to Wlads left side). Sultan will also have to work downstairs all night and counter efficiently. Although Ibragimov came in at 219 lbs, he is considered to be a small heavyweight. However he has deceptive power and arguably possesses the best killer instinct in the game. When Sultan smells blood he attacks like a shark.

Although Ibragimov is a near 5-1 underdog I think he can win this fight. But he will have to box intelligently with literally make no mistakes. They don’t call Klitschko the Steelhammer for nothing.

Pacquiao / Marquez gearing up !

Wednesday, February 20th, 2008

Top rank promoter Bob Arum has declared Manny Pacquiao (45-3-2, 35 KO’s) to be fit and ready for his March 15 rematch with Juan Manuel Marquez in Las Vegas. In an interview with Sports Radio Tuesday, Arum said he visited Pacquiao in training at the Wild Card Gym in Los Angeles and saw for himself how his prized ward is killing himself in training.

“I was in Los Angeles and I just witnessed Manny Pacquiao’s training,” said Arum, who noted that off-the-ring controversies seemed to have zero effect on the Filipino slugger.

“I have never seen any fighter train so hard for two hours without taking one break. I haven’t seen anything like this in 42 years,” Arum said.

“I asked Freddie how he does it. Everybody takes a break. Even Marvin Hagler takes a break. Manny? He never stopped even for one minute. He’s training like a man possessed. He’s in such shape that he’s not human,” Arum added.

Arum said the weight issue is nothing to worry about.

“He has the room to lose the weight,” said Arum amid reports that Pacquiao, with barely a month left, was weighed at 139 lbs or nine pounds over the super-featherweight limit.

Juan Manuel Marquez (48-3, 35 KO’s), on the other hand tipped the scales at just above 132 lbs last Thursday.

Word is that Marquez (training in Mexico) is working just as hard as Manny is.

Pacquiao vs Marquez is set to take place at the Mandalay Bay Events Center. Ticket sales have been great as this rematch promises to be a real scorcher! Stay tuned to Chuckboxing.com for more info on the fight!

Pavlik may face Trinidad next!

Saturday, February 16th, 2008

pavlikbelt.jpgMiddleweight world champion Kelly Pavlik (32-0, 29 KO’s) faces Jermain Taylor on Saturday night at the MGM Grand in their 166-pound non-title rematch, but his promoter, Top Rank’s Bob Arum, is laying the groundwork for Pavlik’s next fight. Rumors are persisting that it could come against former three-division champion Felix Trinidad on June 7 at New York’s Madison Square Garden. Win or lose, Pavlik will remain middleweight champion because the titles are not on the line. Currently, Arum is planning Pavliks first defense. So far the leading candidate is popular rising contender “Irish” John Duddy (23-0, 17 KO’s), who is a big attraction in New York.

Arum said he has spoken to Don King, Trinidad’s promoter, about making Pavlik-Trinidad, which would take place the night before the annual Puerto Rican Day parade in New York. Trinidad, an icon in Puerto Rico with a tremendous following in New York. He’s coming off a decision loss to Roy Jones on Jan. 19, but the former three-division champion looked good in a bout fought at 170 pounds, 10 pounds heavier than Trinidad had ever fought at before.

Arum is coming to New York next week to watch Duddy fight on the undercard of next Saturday’s Wladimir Klitschko-Sultan Ibragimov undercard at the Garden. Arum said Pavlik-Duddy would be an HBO fight, possibly with middleweight titlist Arthur Abraham on the undercard to give him exposure ahead of a possible fall fight with Pavlik. Pavlik-Trinidad would be an HBO PPV fight, Arum said.

There is concern about whether Trinidad can make 160 pounds. He struggled to make 170 for Jones. But Arum said the fight would have to be at 160. Pavlik is unaware of the discussions, Arum said, but Top Rank’s matchmakers and Pavlik’s manager, Cameron Dunkin, are aware of the talks and like the match. “If Trinidad can make that weight and provided the [revenue] split is right, we would love to make the fight,” Arum said. “But I won’t know for sure until I meet with Don King.”

Billed as the Rumble at Rama IV, the Sarnia, Ont., native will face # 1 IBF contender Mexican Fernando Beltran Jr (30-2-1, 18 KO’s), in a mandatory title defense. Beltran, a power punching 26 year old should provide a serious test for Molitor. Molitor’s last fight came against another Mexican, Ricardo Castillo, on Jan. 19 which went 12 rounds with judges awarding a 118-109 unanimous decision in favor of the Canadian.

It will be Molitor’s fourth title defense in 10 months; he first captured the title from Englishman Michael Hunter in November 2006.

Khan’s next fight will not be in the US

Tuesday, February 12th, 2008

Amir Khan (16-0, 12 KO’s) will next fight in Bolton, England after plans for a US debut in Las Vegas have failed. Khan, the 21-year-old Olympic silver medalist will now fight for the European lightweight crown in front of his home fans on Saturday, April 5 vs Yuri Romanov (20-2, 13 KO’s) of Belarus.

Promoter Frank Warren flew to the States in the hope of landing Khan a bout on the same weekend as Joe Calzaghe’s light-heavyweight showdown with Bernard Hopkins.

Talks failed when ITV, who still have two fights left on their contract with Khan, refused to put up the money.

Instead, Khan will take on the 25-year-old Romanov who won the title two years ago and has defended it twice at Bolton Arena.

Warren, the country’s top promoter also has two fights left of his three-year deal with the flamboyant Khan.

WBO gives Margarito 5 days

Tuesday, February 12th, 2008

The World Boxing Organization has given Antonio Margarito (35-5, 25 KO’s) five days to decide if he wants to exercise his right as #1 contender and fight new champion Carlos Quintana. If Margorito declines ( as it might be expected due to his rematch fight with Kermit Cintron on April 12th), “Sugar” Shane Mosley (44-5, 37 KO’s) would become #1 contender.

Mosley is currently working on a contract to fight Zab Judah on May 31st. Therefore, Englishman Michael Jennings (32-1, 15 KO’s) could end up becoming Quintana’s mandatory. Stay tuned for a follow up only on Chuckboxing.com!
